Aerated Autoclaved Concrete Blocks

Technical

Benefits of AAC

  • Due to the lightweight properties of AAC, it results in a reduced dead load on a structure, which means structural frames & foundations can be leaned up which results in substantial cost savings for clients.
  • AAC is a solid wall when compared to dry walling and costs substantially less than high end dry walling systems.
  • AAC covers more m2 in a single solid block laid compared to conventional masonry. Therefore AAC installation is 3 times faster than conventional masonry.
  • Installation of services into AAC (Chasing) is quicker and neater due to the workable nature of AAC.
  • AAC Blocks are extremely dimensionally accurate which allows for a large reduction in waste in masonry and allows a reduced thickness in rendering and increased productivity in finishing trades.
  • Tiles can be applied directly onto the wall, therefore does not require a plaster coat prior to tiling.
  • Skim coats can be applied directly to the wall without the need of a plaster coat, due to the dimensional accuracy of the AAC unit.
  • The closed cell nature of AAC diffuses moisture extremely well, therefore reduces the energy consumption in a building and reduces maintenance costs due to mold.
  • AAC is a non-combustible product and has a superior fire rating compared to any other building material.
  • AAC is 7.5 times more thermally insulated than that of clay bricks and 12.5 times than that of concrete bricks.
  • AAC is a green alternative product which reduces the embodied energy of a building.
  • AAC is bonded together using a proprietary mortar called Thin Bed Mortar with joints being 3mm thick. This allows for less waste on site, early setting with high strength.
  • Blocks can be cut into any shape or form on site using a hand saw.

Concrete and Reinforcing

construction time and cost savings when using Aertec AAC

Aertec completed a 6 storey student accommodation project called '4 on Nursery' where AAC was specified for the external hybrid cavity wall and all internal partition walls. The structural frame consisted of reinforced concrete, supported on 9m deep piles. The structural savings as well as time related savings can be found in the table below, when compared with conventional masonry:

Concrete and Reinforcing, construction time and cost savings
Foundations:21%
Slabs:27%
Columns:35%
Construction time reduction:48%
Total cost saving:21%

Technical Guidelines

Aertec SA have an AAC Building Guidelines Booklet which outlines the different uses of AAC, design perimeters and construction methods. The Aertec AAC Building Guidelines booklet is available upon request. Please contact us for further information.
